Image description: The rolling hills of Tuscany are caressed by the soft light of the morning sky.
Background story: Due to persistently bad weather in the Dolomite region, my friend Maurice and I changed our plans and headed straight on to Tuscany. Since our accommodation in Pienza was close to this well-known location, we made a short detour to get an idea of the local conditions. Once there, we were surprised by the unexpected narrowness of this hotspot, as well as the complete absence of other photographers.
The next morning we went back to this spot 90 minutes before sunrise to be on the safe side for a good viewpoint - but once again we were the only people there.
For pretty much exactly 5 minutes.
What happened next was almost grotesque: photographers flocked in from everywhere, so that this small patch of earth filled up in no time at all, resulting in tumultuous turf wars as well as gentle tripod leg footsie playing.
To everyone's disillusionment, it initially seemed as if this morning wouldn’t offer anything special because of the weather conditions: Due to the closed, structureless cloud cover, a spectacular sunrise was hardly foreseeable, and although it was rather cold, strong winds didn’t allow for any ground fog to build up.
When the clouds unexpectedly caught the beautiful colours of the rising sun, a murmur went through the crowd of photographers and shutters began to click all around.
What followed was one of the most beautiful sunrises I have ever witnessed.
