Title: The Night Watch

Photographer: Marcus Danz

Location: Kastraki, Greece

Year taken: 2019

Image description: Supported by the full moon, an imposing rock needle seems to watch over the Greek village of Kastraki.

Background story: On this evening, I was busy photographing one of the spectacular Meteora monasteries. As darkness fell, I was hoping for some light to appear behind the building’s windows.

Waiting for this, however, was exceptionally hard for me, as I would miss the last chance to photograph the Kastraki scene seen here.

On the evening before, the realisation of this image had unfortunately failed, because of the dense cloud cover obscuring the rising moon.

Desperately weighing the likelihood of illuminated windows against the chance of a gap in the clouds for a visible moon, I looked alternately at the monastery, the sky and my watch.

At the last possible moment, I decided to go all in on the the moon shot, threw the gear on my car’s passenger seat and raced to Kastraki, hoping to get to the location in due time.

On my arrival, the moon was already in the ideal position, but thanks to the experiences with the failed attempt of the previous evening, I managed to re-establish the composition and the required camera settings within a minute and was therefore able to take the necessary pictures - just in time.
